Design & Style
The first thing you notice when taking the Calent out of the box is just how premium it feels and looks.
It’s a sophisticated, sleek-looking vaporizer with a dark metallic grey finish. All the branding and markings on the device are subtle and further accentuate its elegant styling.
It’s not the smallest portable vaporizer you will come across, but it is compact and only measures 4in x 1.7in x 1in. It does feel perfectly comfortable in the hand.
This is helped by the full curved edges and matte finish of the body.
One of the most interesting design choices, which also adds to the compact styling and ease of use, is the inclusion of a 360° Rotatable Mouthpiece.
The mouthpiece can be neatly tucked away on top of the device, then when you are ready to use it, just slide it out. It’s a neat little design and works really well. The mouthpiece is made from Zirconia, feels good in the mouth, and stays cool while in use.
The Calent is also reasonably lightweight for a device containing a 2900mAh battery. It has a USB-C port for charging on the bottom rear of the device. It can charge from flat in approximately 2.5 Hours.
The buttons on the device also feel good and are nice and clicky. There are 4 LED lights that go around the circumference of the fire button, indicating the temperature pre-set you have it set to.
The +/- adjustment buttons are situated beneath the fire button; they are easy to press and adjust your settings with.
It's also worth mentioning that when you switch the Calent on, it gives you haptic feedback by vibrating in your hand. It also does this when putting it in pre-heat mode and when the session is ready. It’s a nice little addition that adds to the premium experience.
Overall the design and build quality of the Calent is excellent. It feels like a high-end product, and the styling is simple yet elegant.
Features
The AUXO Calent comes with an in-built 2900mAh battery.
The Calent has an oven capacity of 0.3g, and the chamber is heated by a combination of conduction and an integrated infrared laser. Manufacturers are advancing ways to heat dry herbs, we’ve seen infrared lasers before, but it’s a welcome addition here.
The combination of conduction and infrared allows the Calent to have extremely even THC extraction in the chamber. As a result, you won’t get too many hot or cold spots in the chamber, and you shouldn’t have to stir your bowl (especially when using a medium grind).
You’ll also get less of a smell during inhales due to the reduced conduction. All of which add to the portability of the device.
Pre-Set Temperatures:
The AUXO Calent comes with four pre-set temperatures:
- 356° Fahrenheit
- 392° Fahrenheit
- 410° Fahrenheit
- 428° Fahrenheit
The heat-up time will be approximately 20-30 seconds before the 3-minute session timer starts (depending on your selected pre-set).
If you have either of the highest temperatures set and are inhaling at a typical rate, you should be able to clear the bowl. However, the lower two pre-sets will probably require another session to clear the bowl.
Operating the AUXO Calent
The Calent is as easy as they come with regards to herb vaporizers. This means you shouldn’t run into any problems, but you are also not able to customize your sessions:
- Remove the magnetic chamber at the top of the Calent. It is held in place with O-rings and simply pulls off.
- Load the chamber with 0.3g of your favorite strain.
- Hold down the power button; the device will switch on and vibrate.
- Set your temperature pre-set by using the +/- buttons. The level set will be indicated by the number of blue lights lit around the fire button.
- Now hold down the + button for a few seconds to activate pre-heat. You will notice the blue lights now begin to circle the fire button.
- The Calent will then vibrate, and all lights will turn green after 20-30 seconds when the temperature has been reached, and you can start your session.
- Pressing the fire button 3 times at any point will show your battery status (each light representing 25%).
Phone App
The Calent also has integrated Bluetooth, and AUXO has created a phone app for both Android and IOS.
The app is pretty straightforward and allows you to control the unit, but it doesn’t let you do any more than you can do on the device itself. So it could be seen as a bit of a gimmick, but I’m sure there will be some techies out there that love that kind of thing.
Who knows, maybe AUXO will add more features to the app down the line.
Performance
I was really impressed with the performance of the AUXO Calent. It’s a sleek device that’s easy to use and does an excellent job for the price. However, there are a few things to take note of.
Firstly, the infrared laser used in the Calent does feel very efficient. It definitely toasts your herb a little more thoroughly than your average portable vaporizer, which is excellent.
However, it seems to work better with a medium or coarse grind. Anything finer tends to clog up the chamber and reduce the airflow.
The Calent also works best with long and slow inhales. I found using a coarse grind and setting the pre-set to 2 (392°) gave me good airflow and enabled me to take nice long hits with decent flavor and vapor.
It still works well at maximum temperature but got a little too hot for my liking.
The 2900mAh battery on the device is perfect and can see you through about an hour of vaping (or 20 x 3-minute sessions). This is definitely ample for a portable vaporizer, and recharge times are not too bad at 2.5 hours.
Verdict
Overall the Calent does everything it sets out to do as a portable vaporizer, and does it with great style.
It’s a sleek-looking device that’s comfortable, easy to use, and delivers good airflow and taste. It’s also very efficient at roasting with its hybrid heat system.
It might not have all the features of more expensive vaporizers, but it’s super easy to use and clean. If that’s what you want in a portable dry herb vaporizer, this is an excellent choice.
